This lexicon is intended as an aide-memoire for talking about diversity and inclusion.

Acceptance
Affirmation and recognition of differences in nationality, race, ethnicity, religion, beliefs, and values, beyond mere tolerance. Not to be confused with tolerance.
Diversity
Diversity concerns the individual. It encompasses the range of unique dimensions, qualities, and characteristics that each of us possesses, as well as the mix that exists within any group of people. These dimensions can include race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, economic status, physical abilities, life experiences, and various other perspectives that contribute to individual diversity. Diversity is a fact, and inclusion is a choice.
Discrimination
Intentional or unintentional denial of the right to equal treatment, civil liberties, and opportunities in education, housing, health care, employment, and access to services, goods and facilities for an individual or group. Discrimination can occur due to factors such as ancestry, place of origin, ethnic origin, citizenship, beliefs, criminal record, race, color, nationality, sex, age, religion, gender identity, gender expression, political affiliation, marital or family status, sexual orientation, physical, developmental, or mental disability.
Employment equity/affirmative action
Policies and practices that encourage barrier-free working conditions, rectify employment disadvantages, and advocate for the principle that special measures are required to meet the needs of Canada's four designated groups: women, Aboriginal peoples, persons with disabilities and members of visible minorities.
