El Toro presents a compelling portrait of society through the life of the Charbonneaus, a French-speaking family immersed in English-speaking Winnipeg of the 1960s, trying to eke out a living as the owners of the El Toro snack bar in an industrial park. It takes the whole family to keep the restaurant afloat, leaving little room for its members to dream their own dreams without putting the business at risk. Everyone is asked to sacrifice their individual desires for the good of the clan. Rosie yearns to escape from this suffocating family dynamic and she may soon get her wish — for in the immortal words of Bob Dylan, “The Times They Are A-Changin’.”
