For centuries, humanity has imagined a magical fountain that could unlock eternal youth. New scientific advances suggest this might actually be a reality in the not-too-distant future. Scientists have already extended the lifespan of animals by up to tenfold, but humanity is the true target. These advances would not only prolong life, but prolong healthy lifespan, delaying the onset of age-related diseases like cancers, osteoarthritis and Alzheimer's. This research raises important ethical and economic questions like how long should we live, and what effect such dramatic changes would have on health care and social security.
